Soundbase not working

I can't get my maxell 252 soundbase to work on my sony KDL40R483 tv

TV has optical digital and analog stereo audio outputs and the soundbase has both kinds as inputs. The optical would be best. Select it as your input on the soundbase. You may have to set the audio out to a different mode on the TV to get sound.
