I have a question: I have an older Dell Dimension 4600, with SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio. I want to record my analog LP records to computer via this device. I want true stereo sound. First of all, will this sound device record in stereo?
(a) If I use a stereo 1/8" input adapter from receiver/amp to computer, which jack do I use, Line-in or Mic?
(b) I have been using a reg 1/8" adapter (not stereo) but could only get Mic jack to work - Line-in would not work. (also this becomes a mono signal, which I can not use). :(
(c) I used online computer tech (@$38) to tell me my computer is not upgradable. But I do have two open PCI slots. :??:
(d) Will I have to upgrade soundcard first? or replace computer with new one? :(

Any info anyone can supply will be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

you should be able to add a soundcard to your pc fairly easily. 99% of pc support specialists read from a script and wouldnt know their you know what from a hole in the ground. my guess would be that a new soundcard and perhaps some software is all you would need.

i've never recorded from external devices before besides a microphone but my guess would be the line in port combined with something other than windows sound recorder. use a real program to record.

for more information try searching google for "convert LP records to digital format" or similar topic. i'm sure you will find exactly what you are looking for.
