I am not sure what part Microsoft plays in the actual DVR part of the box.
All I know is that the cable guide is powered by Microsoft software.

I don't think the Microsoft software has anything to do with the underlying
hardware.

The Microsoft UTV box is actually one of the most stable and usable DVR
products I've seen. Shame Microsoft killed it :-(

(and that from a Microsoft disliker...)

The truth is the truth, and opinion just opinion. But what is what?
My employer pays to ignore my opinions; you get to do it for free.

As opposed to their media center software which is a UI mess, though
getting much better with every iteration. I think this stuff will shake
out in the next 4 or 5 years, with Tivo software becoming ubiquitous on
CE devices (assuming the Comcast deal serves as a catalyst to other
cable providers) and Microsoft's MCE popular on general purpose devices
(MythTV is a wildcard, it's pretty damn good considering, but it doesn't
really have anyone pushing it, like MS MCE and Tivo). Developers are
starting to realize that there's more to creating a good DVR than just
getting the hardware to work, and it's easier to contract out to someone
who's already expended the effort.

It's also not a product Comcast ever handled.
