....This is why utilities should be regulated. Yes, Cellphones *are* utilities now. At one point, people considered wired phones, electricity, etc. just a luxury. When a services gets such penetration into widespread use that the daily life of hundreds of millions of people would be affected, well, that is a utility. Splitting hairs about the service level is pointless.
It's not growing data consumption that is the problem, it's profits that just aren't growing fast enough.
It's not enough anymore just to be profitable, if you don't have record breaking quarters and massive year over year growth, you're considered a failure. The solution? It used to be cost cutting; now that just about every corner has been cut, and costs are mostly fixed, the only solution is to charge more. When was the last time you paid less for *any* service over the long term? Inflation is the real culprit here.
