Solved! Steps to perform error-checking on compaq laptop

Hello, I have closed all the programs I am using I (believe) yet when I attempt error-checking on drive c it tells me that it can't be performed while the disk is in use. Any suggestions?

You have click check now and indicate you want it to fix errors and recover lost sectors. It complain it cannot do it now, but gives the option to do so on bootup. Allow it to do it on bootup and restart your computer and the error check will be done before Windows starts. The time to completion will vary with the size of your drive.
