[citation][nom]supertrek32[/nom]If you watch TV, you're a fat couch potato. If you read books, you're a know-it-all book worm.If you surf the internet, you have no life.If you play sports, you're a stupid jock....what exactly are we supposed to do in our spare time?[/citation]

I used to watch a lot of TV, I was a lazy idiot.
Then I got interested in sports, and I became a jerk.
Then I started to read a lot, and I neglected reality.
Now I spend all my time on my computer. I still have a social life, I'm in decent physical shape, and I think I'm a pretty decent person. I'm also learning all the time.

So, I'll take my internet addiction any day.

Just hungry for knowledge... In my country it is very hard to get information from book, TV shows, even schools teach us DOS, Pascal, and other obsolete stuff... So, for me it is the easiest way (read: cheapest) of learning about new technologies and solving computer-related problems.

[citation][nom]Kelavarus[/nom]Weird... We already have gun stores...But... Social phobia and depression? Those could LEAD someone to the Internet in the first place. And why are people hung on sociality? How is that a PROBLEM? The majority of people are idiots, and those that choose not to associate themselves with such now have mental issues? Great...[/citation]

EXACTLY! I had that problem. If a doctor had noticed it early on, I may have not become a successful software engineer at a well known company around the world. Instead I would be a looser of a baseball player thinking to be socially acceptable I need to be tall and athletic and play pro sports and have a dizzy blond for a wife.

Next pharmaceutical companies will have a drug to fix it. It will cost $20 a tablet you will need 2 a day for the rest of your life and the side effect will include nausea, vomiting, blindness and possible stroke. But you won't be addicted to the internet and you don't need to worry about being a successful software engineer one day.

I think you can find this in the public library. It just doesn't have pictures.

Im an addict and still "feed the machine" very well. Not only do I have over a grand spent online on my computer alone but apparently its a great source to buy other things with. Few hundred a week toward online spending due to this so called addiction.

I'll take an internet addiction over drug addiction anyday. I mean, at least you're not puking your guts out, having migraines or having other physical withdrawl symptoms if your computer breaks down or internet connection is on the fritz.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.

Next they'll be saying that every interest and hobby is a dirty, nasty addiction.
So I suppose watching sports on the television is an addiction? I know of men and women who watch it EVERY chance they get. They talk about it EVERY chance they get. And when they are not watching it or talking about it, they are playing sports related video games. Yep, guess Sports is an addiction too. Perhaps we should study 2,000 people to see just how much time they spend involving themselves in sports related things.

Ahh, but here is the thing. Society as a whole accepts sports as being healthy and good for you. You get exercise, interact with people, and develop team work. Yay! (Not)

Sure internet involves not doing much activity and leads to a lot of negative outcomes, but so do a lot of other things. Sports, for example, can lead to life altering injuries and addiction to drugs and/or steroids.

But hey, society is apparently all-knowing and if they say that it is good for you, then I guess they think we should all be lemmings and just go with it.

how about ALL OF THE ABOVE?

The issue is when you do one thing, and one thing only to the exclusion of almost everything else.

[citation][nom]xander69696969[/nom]I find it funny everything is considered a health problem; I guess that keeps people who work in the medical field and drug companies in business…. I think half of the health issues that these doctors and drug companies create are phony and just another cash crop. Don’t get me wrong there are those who have addiction to just about anything or use to much of something nobody is prefect. i am sure their is a drug, i lov the depression commercials on tv some guy looking out a window...omg take our drug...really i understand some people are sick, do crazy things like cut themselves and such please med them, but a guy who looks glum after a bad day doesn't require a drug to fix his problem.[/citation]

I could not agree more.
I have found that limiting my 9 year old daughter's TV and Computer usage to about 2 hours per week, supervised, a lot of this abnormal behavior never shows up. Also her school has no computers in the classroom, and the spend about 50% of their time playing with other children learning social skills.

The "Internet" is my library, movie theatre, radio, cd player, magazine rack, newspaper, journal, university... I simply see it as a way of spending less on gas...

I wonder if any research was done to see what causes the depression, social phobia, and angst? Could it be...that society itself is the cause of these symptoms that would lead someone to spend more time on the internet? OH NO...of course not.

Life is a series of addictions (habits). As to "detrimental effects," I maintain the majority of people haven't even started to grasp the difficulty involved in categorizing activities "beneficial" and "harmful." What is implicit in the modern sense of these judgments is the exaggerated concern with "work" stemming from the Reformation.

We've lost sight of the ancients' good conscience in idleness and leisure, both presuppositions of a reflective consciousness. Of course, our conception of leisure is a debased one compared to that of Aristotle, for instance.
