Surface pro 2 vs 300$ dollar laptop

I'm seeing the surface pro 2 for sale online I know it has a full version of Windows I'm wondering if a laptop around that price point would offer better performance and if so any recommendations

I've seen plenty of 300$ laptops with Pentiums

Which Pentium CPU are you referring to?

There are Pentium CPUs that are based on the Atom architecture. In fact, I think Intel shifted the Pentium brand down to the Atom CPUs. For example, the Pentium N3540 is a quad core Bay Trail-M CPUs which is part of the Atom lineup.
