Surround sound problems

I have a RCA 46la45rq and a samsung HT F4500 5.1 surround sound, the tv has a coaxial digital output and the samsung has a tosilink optical so i bought a convertor, when i put the convertor in i expected for my sound finally to work but it is not, my tv has settings for digital sound and analog sound but they are grey so i cant choose them to change them I have no idea how to fix this problem can you please help me? I have a digital output on my tv and a optical input on my receiver and I bought a convertor and I can figure out why it isnt working maybe the settings in my tv?

You may have to turn off the TV speakers in the audio menu before the output settings will work. The coax to optical converter you got may be bad. See if you can check it on another system.
