well I don't see as it being a copy of anything. clearly this was before even the iphone was released so how can it be a copy of RIM or Apple? Besides, creativity and innivation comes from taking good ideas and using them in different ways. I think "copying" is good, as it creates progress. Once one way of doing things is established as superior and working well, it's only natural that others follow and try to improve on that idea. You don't reinvent the wheel each time you make a new one.

No kidding. Remember when Google had an Exec on Apple's board. Part of that was to help integrate the Google Map into the original iPhone. Then year later, "disagreements" led to that Exec leaving the Apple board. Year later, "Droid" coming to VW.

WWWWEEEEIIIRRRDDDD!

you dumb arse, before any of these, there were the Nokia and Sony Ericson. You North Americans are isolated from the rest of world thanks to your monopolizing wireless companies who pushed RIM through your throats. Before North Americans see anything with color screen, ASIA enjoyed phones with color lcd and cameras. And to point out some of the phones with touch (stylus based) capabilities other than handheld computers such as Palm and PocketPC Check this out:

And you could play checkers on it, and well.. That's about it.

You do know that a lot of phone manufacturers that produce Android phones already manufactured phones prior to Android, and almost all of them had phones without keyboard or keypads. Also phones with full qwerty keyboards on the bottom existed before the Blackberry's.

Yes because Apple invented touchscreen phones without keyboards /s
HTC may not have been first but 2002 is 5 years before the iPhone. Plenty of windows mobile phones had touch screens and "apps" but no market place which made them a pain to use in that respect.
Also this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Prada
Apple by no means invented anything with the iPhone, just a shiny case, mass marketing, and an app store.
Also, why is anyone complaining about "copycat this" "copycat that" never saw anyone complain about the Blackjack which was an obvious competitor and rip off of most RIM blackberrys, but hey if it suits your argument you'll use what ever fits right? -_-

Few errors here

#1 - G1 came with android 1.1 which didn't have a codename 1.6 Donut came much later to the device.

#2 - G1 was a competitor to the iPhone 3g as that was out at the same time and was used as a comparison with a lot of my friends when I first got my G1 2 days before release date.

So much arguing about the past. If only a tenth of that were used to work of the future then the world would be a better place.

Seriously though, everyone copied Palm who copied Apple who copied...who? I forget. The point is that it goes all the way back to random human a who copied random human b when it came to making fire. Original ideas are few and far between. Everyone copies everyone by taking what they think is best from wherever and putting it all in one thing. That is how progress is made.

There were stylus PalmOS and Windows CE based phones that predate your examples.

It's all moot. Those guys lost in the long run. What's amazing that for all the robust cellphone cultures around the world... the world market is now largely dominated by very American Google and Apple. More surprisingly, Symbian is literally being replaced by Windows Phone!
