As a physician, I have found that cotton balls from QTips is the most common issue with foreign bodies in the ear canal. We kept a tool called an alligator forceps to remove these, and the occasional insect or other item found on exam. Hopefully, all those I removed were off brand. One patient managed to have cotton balls in BOTH ears from what I hope was a defective package.
