[citation][nom]Bolbi[/nom]Glad to see that perhaps transportation will become privately-held rather than government-run. Government seems to spoil every pie into which it sticks its finger...[/citation]

In Vancouver (Canada), our transit system is (virtually) government run and it is pretty good. I think that if we just continue to keep expanding service, eventually the majority of people could take transit efficiently. If you want private transportation that will take you to places not easily accessible via transit, take a cab.

This would work if, 1 you could buy your own pod, no smelly bumb residue, and two it was it was as flexible as your current car.

In major cities I can see this working, not only getting around town, but having the option to act as an elevator as well.

A big plus if I could send it off or a smaller/larger cargo only version autonomously to run errands for me.

Great idea considering nearly every public transportation sytem in the united states is bankrupt and unsustainable without municipal/state/federal funding. If public transporation worked then those subsidies wouldn't be necessary.

I hope this is not the future, already cities are so impersonal, internet is making it worse, and now even public transport puts you in a lil bubble

Seriously i really dont get this hostility against gov run (or regulated) programs...you know why they are broke? so you can get around without it being a financial burden and/or because it goes places that isn't profitable (not enough people)
if you take public transport and it gets privatised and derugulated either you'll find yourself paying much more or that your bus route don't exist anymore (profit will be the goal not service)
look at your health care, and i even heard (dt know if its true) that they will still refused medical coverage for kids with pre existing conditions..just the fact that gov had to tell them to stop is beyond me....thats the private sector for you

I've always considered public transit as an extension of the public road network, which is paid for by the government. Buses help to free up congestion and clean the air (through less private transport). Also, if I take the subway, why should my taxes pay for roads and not for the subway. If anyone thinks that public transport should be 100% private, then so should roads / bridges.

I like it, for obvious reasons. Environment, traffic, etc.

[citation][nom]IncinX[/nom]As awesome as this would be. They need to plan out a mass cleaning system for these things. You just know you would get in one someday and there would be a giant turd on the floor.[/citation]
This is the only problem I see with it... although you could just have everything water-proof (latex seats or whatever) and just send the things through giant baths. Think your cars too dirty? Press the cleaning button and a new one will come, the other heads off to get clean.

OR

Each person could have their own car that docks at their house (without cars, you'll have space in your garage). It's basically like buying a car then, but instead of gas it hooks into the public transport powergrid-rail thing. Maybe have electric batteries for short (and slow) drives to your garage or through the parking lots. You'd be using existing facilities, which means cost comes down.

Looks so new but it isn't that much different than what Walt Disney, you know from Micky Mouse, had proposed for Los Angeles in the 50s.
