Nobody I know with a cable DVR has gotten an upgrade. Maybe they could if
they made some noise, but the local cable companies certainly aren't
proactively replacing anything.

Make some noise as in calling them up and asking for a new box???

I could see why the cable co's wouldn't bother if you don't ask.

Everyone I know who asked got a new one. No charge.

This is probably the most interesting piece of information in the article.

DirecTV has had no problem putting TiVo-powered DVRs into nearly 2M of their
subscriber homes, or over 10%, even though the DirecTiVos have an up-front
charge for the purchase *and* a monthly fee (albeit smaller than the Comcast
fee).

I guess the quality of the TiVo software does make a difference.

And, since that box won't be available until at least Q1 2006 (although
the prediction is Q4 2005, I don't think they will make it), there can't be
*any* recording of the new HD LIL until then, so no need to swap.
