With so much choice out there, buying can be a difficult decision. I
have finally managed to short list the laptop models I am interested
in. All of these are Toshiba. Can someone recommend one over the other
or post their experiences ?

The config of the models are given below. Strangely enough, only
A45-S250 and M35-S320 are available in stores. If one needs to buy
M30-S350 or A40-S270, then it has to be through one of the online
vendors or directly from Toshiba

USAGE: Need for home usage- will create documents, create website,
access net and email... basically generic stuff. No gaming needs. Will
be rarely used for watching DVDs

CONFIG (All are 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, CD-RW)

A45-S250
P4-2.8 GHz, 4 USB, 7.7 lbs, XP-Home, (Video) Intel 852GME, L2- 512,
DDR-266 MHz
DVD-RW integrated

M35-S320
P4M-1.5 GHz, 3 USB, 6.2 lbs, XP-Home, (Video) NVIDIA GeForce 5200, L2-
1024, DDR-333 MHz

M30-S350
Pent-M- 1.5 GHz, 3 USB, 6.2 lbs, XP-Prof, (Video) NVIDIA GeForce 5200,
L2- 1024, DDR-333 MHz

A40-S270
P4- 2.8 Ghz, 4 USB, 7.7 lbs, XP-Prog, (Video) Intel 852 GME, L2- 512,
DDR- 266 Mhz

Thanks in advance

M30-S350 is the clear choice.

Lighter, better CPU, larger cache,
faster memory, faster video and
better OS.

Dan, Thanks for the input. Due to availability and price issues, I
have had to drop M30-S350 and A40-S270. These 2 laptops are not
available at any store and even Toshiba folks claim they don't have
these in stock.

So now I am down to TWO (both have 60 GB 4200 rpm HDD, 512 MB RAM)-
Toshiba A45-S250
P4-2.8 GHz, 4 USB, 7.7 lbs, XP-Home, (Video) Intel 852GME, L2- 512,
DDR-266 MHz
DVD-RW integrated

Toshiba M35-S320
P4M-1.5 GHz, 3 USB, 6.2 lbs, XP-Home, (Video) NVIDIA GeForce 5200, L2-
1024, DDR-333 MHz
CD-RW (no option for DVD-RW. Toshiba won't sell the DVD-RW separately)

The documentation says that both these laptops require 15V, so my
guess is that these are not manufactured by the dreaded Compal.

Folks, suggestions and inputs are requested...

Kamal,

No offense intended at all, but - WHY - would you spend SOOOO much on a P4
'screamer' laptop if all you're going to do is what you listed as requirements?
Those two choices are going to cost you how much? I'm not pushing anything in
particular, but for $350-$500 you can get a - really - nice Thinkpad that can do
everything you listed for a whole lot less money! Unless you have lots of cash
you have to spend for your tax bracket, look for an IBM thinkpad 600X. 4.5lbs,
1" thin, reeeeally nice laptops. Running 450-500mhz, upgradable to 850mhz(if
you wish) max RAM of 576MB, can take up to an 80GB hd, they can be had, well
decked out for $500. That's $800-$1000 less than some Toshiba you cant get
parts for...

Stop into ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad .ng and ask around. You'll like what you hear, and
like even more the $$ you'll save.

Just my .02 worth..

Take the M35-S320.

Same reasons as above.
