Toshiba laptop suddenly has "startup password"

My daughter's laptop suddenly requires a "startup password". She did fall prey to one of those "Microsoft" callers. (& her computer is not pre-owned). Can anyone help with this?

With no way to prove ownership we can't help here, legally. The manufacturer could so you'd have to contact them.
