I was wondering if I could get a USB wireless adapter for this laptop and be able to connect to my internet at home?

Yes, but make sure that the one you get has drivers for XP if that is what you are running on the laptop. And it's not recommended that you connect an XP system to the internet as it's no longer patched for security holes.
