Pretty much the cheapest portable new computer you can get would be a Netbook. They run in the ~$300 range. Netbooks lack power compared to laptops but are ultra-lightweight and portable.

The second thing I would try would be to look at the Dell outlet for refurbished laptops. Sometimes you can score great deals there.

You can always try ebay or especially craigslist but you are taking your chances buying used like that. Who knows you might find something on craigslist free or real close.

Have you tried visiting your local library? They should have PCs you can use for free.
