Troubleshooting onkyo HT s3400

Hello,

I connect the speakers to the receiver, and use HDMI to connect TV to the receiver. When turning on the receiver and selecting the "TV" as the input, there is no sound from the speakers but only from the TV, why?

output hdmi on the television is really an output?
output hdmi on the television is turned off?
