Trying to build a 5.1 system

I finally have room to have a good sound setup but I have no idea where to begin. Im looking to build a 5.1 for around 1k maybe more if need be. Any suggestions on speaker sets and or recievers that are well priced now?

Step 1: Inventory what you already have and what you want/can to keep/use.

Step 2: An AV receiver (multiple HDMI, multiple opticals) within the budget, taking consideration step 1.

make a list of what features you need and what sources you are looking to connect up as well as a few ideas of how you want placement to be. also note room size, layout and obstructions, etc. floor wiring, wall wiring, on the wall wiring or ceiling wiring for rear speakers?

generally you will be looking at a receiver, speakers or speaker set and a subwoofer. stay far away from HTIB units. you may also need wall plates, speaker mounts, speaker wire or other things like dvd player etc depending on your needs.

as far as what brands and products, you would need to list what country. assuming usa but if not usa please state and say where you can buy products from.

for usa.. my own system was just a little more than your budget and i've been very happy with it. i use klipsch's quintet satellite set paired with a 450w klipsch subwoofer and it works out well in my 14x15. we have sony floorstanders in the other room which while not as sharp were surprisingly very good for the low price paid. of course there are many other options available - i would suggest going to some places with products on display and listening to them and figure out what you like the most.

polk makes some pretty decent stuff. boston acoustics isnt bad either. listen to them first if possible.

psw10 isnt a bad budget sub paired with that set you were looking at but its also very light on power too. around 50w output. while not a terrible low budget choice, its going to lack some power. daytons sub- prefixed models are pretty good value for the money and compete directly with that but offer more output.

Just to put another option out there;

Since you're giving a little wiggle room above 1k:
Wavecrest Audio HVL-1 x5: $550 I think it's still on sale for $500
Hsu Research STF-2 Sub: $360, on sale for $320

With shipping maybe around $950 total.

This sub on another level compared to the PSW10, and personally I'd take the Wavecrests over the Polks also.

If that's going to be too much over $1000 with an AVR, you could substitute the Hsu for a Dayton Sub-1500 at $200. With that you'd be looking at most $800 (highly doubt the HVL-1's would cost $100 to ship).
