turn on the touchpad when it turns off

my touchpad isn't on now, and I think there is a way to switch it back on, but can't remember how...

Listing the brand and model of the laptop may help troubleshoot.

Some have a small area on the touchpad you can tap to turn it on / off, a key combination, in the mouse control panel applet, in the BIOS. If you do a web search for your model and touchpad you should get some info.
