Turning an old laptop into tv-box

Ho'de fawkz! I've got an old HP Pavilion dv6 laptop. Wonder, whether I can turn it into a multimedia streaming device, e.g TV-Box?

- connect it to your TV
- install XBMC/Kodi, either over current Windows installation, or wiping existing hard drive completely and using eg OpenElec
- load it with movies / music, or connect it to your computer which stores media

Which performs better - if I wipe completely and install special streaming OS like on tv-box, or use Media server with current Windows/Linux OS?
