TV on Stand BY

I can not access any function of my tv with the remote control, only until a few moments of keep pressing Device on the remote it works, only for a while and again goes into stand by mode.

not the best on tv's but had similar problem with a customer and unpluged tv for about a minute then pluged back in and worked. tv was stuck in test pattern neither of had seen and remote and everything else didn't work, oh and we also at one point used the power button on the tv and not the remote. sorry if this doesn't help
