Does long term usage of tv does cause damage to the tv?

Define long term usage. I have had TVs last for years with zero issues. We used a previous plasma HDTV for 7 years with zero issues. Gave to neighbors who have been using since (an additional 5 years).

Usage of anything is what causes things to fail, some slowly some faster. If you have a TV on for long hours then consider getting a commercial grade set with a longer warranty and 24 hr run rating.
