I have a Inspiron 2650 that I blended together with a 2600. I upgraded the ram to the full capacity (512MB, I know it sucks) and added a Pioneer DVD-RW drive and a Hitachi 7200RPM 60GB HDD. I had the new parts in a 2600 which was a PIII 1.0Ghz CPU with integrated graphics. I moved them over to the 2650 because it had a working battery, P4m 1.7Ghz, and a Geforce 2 16mb graphics card. I just had to move my screen over to make it work.
My question: I was looking around for a battery and came across the processor replacements. It seems like I can go all the way up to a 2.4Ghz P4m. I did some research and they look the same just with a different multiplier. Would moving from a 1.7Ghz to a 2.4Ghz help that much? I can barely watch a movie on VLC player. It shudders once in awhile and the CPU usage is about 85% or so. I can get a used one for about 40 bucks so its not too bad.
Also does anyone know if I could maybe put the 32MB Geforce 2 in this thing instead of the 16mb GF2? I think the 32MB is a MX240 and the 16MB is the 200 Value or something along those lines. So far I haven't been able to find an answer.
And lastly, I appreciate your help but please don't tell me I need to upgrade to a new laptop. That is out of the question. I don't have enough money to get what I would like and I generally use this for internet, music, and movies. So any help to my questions would be appreciated. Thanks
Link to processor I am considering putting in.
