tried to use two different card readers for my camera memory (xd) card, and keep getting the response, these are older usb2.0 devices and not compatible with usb3.0 ports. Everywhere I have looked for help says usb3.0 ports are compatible with older usb devices so why doesn't my laptop agree?

Solution
Thanks for the response, I eventually got one usb port to accept my old desktop card reader and successfully downloaded my pictures, after deleting and retrying everything. Not going to bother with the little portable reader as long as the big one works now, it was cheap and I'll probably just bin it. Cheers
USB3 ports are indeed capable of running both USB2 and USB1 devices. That said, this doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with the SD cards you are trying to read.

Have you tried placing them back into the devices they were used in, and then connecting those devices to the laptop? That is usually the best way to get the data.

There could also be something wrong with the card readers themselves. Have you tried them on any other devices to see if they work then?
