is there a usb otg ssd i can use with an android phone would it need to be powered by an adapter or is usb flash drives the only option?

Solution
SSD can be used through OTG but requires more specific hardware for that purpose.
Here is an example of an SSD capable of OTG, with the cable included http://www.thessdreview.com/our-reviews/mydigitalssd-otg-pocket-superspeed-ssd-review-256gb/

Solution
There is no box solution that I have ever seen for that.
You could get a usb OTG cable and connect it to an SSD drive in an external enclosure. Wont garantee that it will work or that your phone would power it.

Also worth noting, you are using usb 2.0 connection on phones, so speeds will be in the double, not triple digits mb/s
Would be better off using a large capacity flash drive than a SSD
