Almost all laptop batteries anymore are of Lithium technology (some say Lithium Ion, but most are Lithium Polymer) which will explode when they're overcharged. Because of this, the batteries have an electrical circuit which prevents them from overcharging. More or less, once they register 100% full, the batteries are cut off from the circuit, and the computer only sporadically monitors their charging. Therefore, using the computer while it's plugged in does not adversely affect the batteries directly.
