VAIO TR3A arriving

After looking at the Fujitsu LifeBook 5020D and Sony VAIO TR3A, I have
decided on the TR3. Although the P5 has better keyboard, modular bay with
optional second battery and cheaper, the TR3 won by the amazing bright
screen and the convenient zoom button. I think I would have use for the
gimmicky camera. The fisher price looking keyboard might be a big learning
curve though. When I receive the notebook, I'm going to install XP Pro,
possibly wipe out the hard drive first. What precaution do I need to take
before doing it?

Make a copy of the C:\Windows\Drivers folder which contains the
proprietary Sony drivers in the original OS installation. These drivers
are not available for the TR series on Sony support so this folder is
the only source. The /Program Files/Sony folder contains the hotkey
utilities HKServer.exe and HKWind.exe and SNSetup.exe, the BIOS setup
utility, all of which can be placed in the startup folder. SNSetup is
not strictly required since F2 at boot will enter Bios Setup. These are
all simply executables. In \Windows\System32\drivers is a hidden file
Sony_your_model.mrk and some other Sony and SNY files that might be
useful. The .mrk file is the identifier for the software installation
CDs I believe. Snyunif.cty, sonync.sys, sonypi.sys might also be useful
although they are in the Windows\Drivers folder.

Check the Notebook Hardware FAQ on this site for additonal hints on
preserving the proprietary Sony drivers and applications.

You can also do a general file search for the date range that the sony
files were prepared that will find most if not all of the proprietary
files and folders based on the dates of the files in the Windows\Drivers
folder.

Make sure Sony has drivers for that OS - they're infamous for not
supporting an OS they didn't install at the factory.
