I think it depends where you live. If you do anything in rural Nebraska (I know, who cares no one lives here) you would be silly not to have Verizon. I have co-workers with the iphone and AT&T service that think they are great as long as they do not leave Omaha or Lincoln. Same story with other providers, very shaky coverage in rural areas. They may have better plans but their coverage for my needs has me using Verizon. Now for the iphone, one of my co-workers says he is lucky to get 5 hours before plugging into something. He has batteries that he plugs into the phone to get him through the day. He does not like the camera quality, but everything else he loves. It is all about the need of the individual.
