720p doesn't look bad, considering you're not sitting 1.5 feet from the screen like it's a PC monitor. From 8-10 feet away like it's supposed to be seen it's still a night and day difference from 480p. And 1080 on a TV screen doesn't really start making a noticeable difference until you're at 46" or larger, so it's really a waste to have larger PC monitor resolutions on an HDTV. Simply not the same thing.

High Definition is defined at 720p.

All in all, it's just a resolution. And high definition begins at 720p.
