one of Atari's great mysteries is the XE-styled console prototype /
mock-up called MIRAI.

Mirai basicly means 'Future' in Japanese.

you know the NeoGeo....
SNK... The *Future* Is Now

hmmm, well....

Mirai had a HUGE cartridge slot, and, SNK's U.S. office was right next
to one of Atari's offices.

It is almost 100% certain that MIRAI was either:
a 16-bit Atari ST-based console. or a NEO*GEO-based console.
both possibilities make sense for many reasons.

please read these threads on the subject, and take in all of the info
& speculation.

browse to www.neo-geo.com > Forums > General Discussion and find the
Atari MIRAI thread

there is another one here:
http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4028
(similar info, but obviously a different, seperate discussion)

Also, these 2 AtariAge.com forum threads (below) have a little info
and *alot* of speculation on the Atari Mirai console, including its
possible (likely?) connection to SNK-NeoGeo.

1.)

2.)
http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=57561&postdays=0&posto...
http://www.tinyurl.com/5vbry (tinyurl ver)
(pages 3 & 4 are where Mirai is discussed)

up until this weekend, there was, from what I could find, basicly
nothing about Atari Mirai on usenet. there was like one post that
mentioned it. but no info. no questions. no speculation. no nothing.

so, I guess, concider this post to be the first real discussion on
Atari Mirai on usenet. (if there are other *usenet* threads, please
show me!)

finally, here are the 3 main web-articles speculating
on Mirai being an Atari-branded Neo*Geo

Cool info. My guess would be Neo Geo derivative. My company actually
talked with Atari about licensing the Panther once Atari had moved on to the
Jaguar. My understanding is that there were no outer shell mock-ups of the
Panther. Panther was only "breadboards" as far as I know.

Dane.

Unfortunately I cannot RTFA because those sites are blocked from my
current location. But I did manage to loacate a picture of the Mirai on
Google - and I see it has SIX buttons on the console! But the Neo Geo
only has ONE button. So if Mirai was a Neo Geo rebadge, then what were
all those extra buttons for?

It's too wide to be a Neo Geo machine. It would have to be twice the
width of a Neo Geo cartridge by looking at that picture. That would be
a HUGE machine. I'd vote for the ST-based console perhaps.
