one of Atari's great mysteries is the XE-styled console prototype /
mock-up called MIRAI.
Mirai basicly means 'Future' in Japanese.
you know the NeoGeo....
SNK... The *Future* Is Now
hmmm, well....
Mirai had a HUGE cartridge slot, and, SNK's U.S. office was right next
to one of Atari's offices.
It is almost 100% certain that MIRAI was either:
a 16-bit Atari ST-based console. or a NEO*GEO-based console.
both possibilities make sense for many reasons.
please read these threads on the subject, and take in all of the info
& speculation.

browse to www.neo-geo.com > Forums > General Discussion and find the
Atari MIRAI thread
there is another one here:
http/assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4028
(similar info, but obviously a different, seperate discussion)
Also, these 2 AtariAge.com forum threads (below) have a little info
and *alot* of speculation on the Atari Mirai console, including its
possible (likely?) connection to SNK-NeoGeo.

(pages 3 & 4 are where Mirai is discussed)
up until this weekend, there was, from what I could find, basicly
nothing about Atari Mirai on usenet. there was like one post that
mentioned it. but no info. no questions. no speculation. no nothing.
so, I guess, concider this post to be the first real discussion on
Atari Mirai on usenet. (if there are other *usenet* threads, please
show me!)
finally, here are the 3 main web-articles speculating
on Mirai being an Atari-branded Neo*Geo
