What compact camera is the best?

First of all my english is not that great, sorry for that.
In a few weeks i'm going on vacation to the alps (skiing) and i want to take some nice photo's but not with my smartphone.

I want to buy a compact camera.

I've read alot and searched many sites; i found 2 camera's.
-Sony RX100 3
-Panasonic TZ100/ZS100

i've read that the sony shoots better pictures and the panasonic is better for zoom.
My question is, if i really need the 10 times optical zoom of the panasonic or if i'm fine with the 2.9x optical zoom of the sony (with better quality photos)

The camera's both cost 549 EUR (660USD) (487£) in belgium

Wich one should i buy for shooting in the mountains?
Do you know other (better) good compact camera's?

Different people have different needs. Some people value compactness, others lots of manual functions. Low price might be very important to you, or maybe you're rich and price is no object. Contrary to Apple's marketing, there is no such thing as a "best" camera, phone, tablet, laptop, etc. The reason there are so many different models out there is because different models hit different people's sweet spot.

So unless you tell us some of the things you're looking for in a camera, we can't tell you which model may be best for you. Try browsing DP Review's recommended lists to see what's out there and what features you may want (and which you don't care about).

If you don't really want to spend extra on having a weatherproof camera I really recommend Sony RX100 series. I have the first series and it's just a great quality camera.

I really doubt if i need the zoom for shooting pictures in the mountains.
I am afraid if i buy the sony, i can't shoot for example a mountain further away from me. Altough the sony shoots better quality photo's.
What do you guys think, should i go for the better quality or more zoom reach? i think 2.9x optical zoom max 70mm is a little low isn't it?

"Zoomed-in" photos of distant mountains are boring. You lose perspective. There is a grandeur to nature that you can not capture by zooming in on bits and pieces of it.

Also the larger sensor in the Sony will produce better image quality.

For both of those cameras in that price range, I would think either would be fine. We have an older Panasonic 12 megapixel camera (4 years old or so and costing around $300 if I recall), and it takes nice pictures. Once you get the camera, spend a bunch of time before your trip to get really familiar with all of the features, as some cameras are very complicated to get the full features utilized.

I just ordered a pair of spare batteries and a spare charger for our Panasonic for around $21 on Amazon. That way if you take a bunch of pictures in a single day you can swap out the batteries while out and about. Also, don't forget about getting a SD card (or micro SD, whatever the camera takes), and get the fastest card the camera supports. Ideally, if you have a laptop you can take along on the trip you can back up the pictures each night in the event the SD card fails, or you somehow lose the camera.
