what does 'rooted' mean

What does the term 'rooted' actually mean? I am not a techno person...to me 'rooted' means something has taken hold in the garden

In terms of tablets it can mean to install the original operating system. For example, my Kindle Fire (don't laugh lol) runs the Amazon OS on top of Android. To "root" to tablet means to install stock Android on the Kindle Fire tablet.
