What gpu for 1440p gaming

Whats the best gpu or pair for 1440p ultra settings in all titles at 60fps minimum

I'd be looking to recommend the GTX 980/970 or GTX 780ti. Have you got a budget in mind? I know I'm going to get attacked by folk saying otherwise but it's just my two cents.

i was thinking to get a gigabyte gtx 970 g1 then maybe another in a bit but want to max games out so maybe i should stick at 1080p but got my eye on a xstar korean monitor at 200 quid so dunno dont want to go 1440p and find i gotta run at less than ultra cos ive bumped up the res but i do fancy 1440p now i think

I'd go for the 970 GTX. Very good price per performance.

Any of the these will do just fine, Ati 290x,780 GTX, 780 Ti, 970 GTX and 980 GTX.

If you want to max out at that resolution @ 60fps I'd probably aim for a specialty card or a dual GPU card...but again you can grab 2 970s and be pretty good

970s or a r9 295x2 i know the gtx is newer and comes with dsr and that but the sli config might not run as smooth as the 295x2, its still 2 chips but being on same board may help over sli set up. i dont really want any issues that come with multi card set ups

it shouldn't make a difference 2 chips on 1 pcb or 2 chips separated by a bridge. Unless there is something wrong with your bus.

From my experience sli or crossfire you will have trouble with some games, and be flawless with others but usually as long as you keep it to 2 cards you should be good...any more and your adding more complications and imo isn't always worth it (mostly for benchmarkers or heavy enthusiasts).

I'd say grab 1 970 GTX and then add another if you still don't like the performance. If you buy a dual GPU card you are forcing yourself to buy 2 cards (you can still use 1 gpu if you chose😛).


Edit: Also the 295x just like the Titan Z are very overpriced compared to buying 2 invidiual cards that may yield better performance do to better cooling.

i heard today that newer games will require 6gb vram for ultra settings so maybe the r9 295x2 with is 8gb vram (i think ) is the right choice because ill only have 4gb vram on the gtx 970 what do u think

i can get the 295 for £700 or 2 gtx 970 for £600 so pricing is not an issue id rather pay more if it meant i wasnt capping out my vram at 4gb but i know the gtx is a better card than the r9 290x soooo lol

What 8 gb vram? It's 4 and 4 per pcb. It's still only using up to 4 GB of ram it doesn't stack unfortunately.

Edit Also the 970s being £100s less yields you 2 brand new released cards, better cooling, more overclocking potential and DX 12 (though not implemented yet still there for the future).

At 1440p (even though it specifically isn't listed), you should be just fine. At this time the 980 is the only better card, and it is only marginally better. You would pick up a few more FPS, and I don't find that worth the additional cost.

If you can wait, wait. There are rumors of a 980ti, and 8GB models for later in the year, closer to November.

8gb sounds good but what would be the premium on that card

There are some newer games that recommend 6gb of VRAM for max graphics. It has turned out that it isn't necessary, but there will come a time in the future where it will be.

It wasn't that long ago where 1.5g cards were though of as "overkill".

Cost wise... I think the upcharge from 2-4gb for the 770's was about $40-50...
