What is the logic behind left-shifted Touchpads?

Anandtech has a thread on it but everybody is guessing.

Solution
It's just a design decision, my Tosh lappy has one. Would be handy if I was left-handed I suppose.

Makes no difference to me where they put the touchpad as I never use it - - I'm a long-time (25 years) mouse user even on a laptop - - I hate touchpads, too slow and unintuitive.

Solution
You mean left shifted mouse pad on something like a 15.6" laptop with numeric pad?

That's basically to align it with the spacebar.

Keypad! -DUH! Never noticed laptops have keypads but I guess the 15" do. I thought this maybe another DVORAK invention or something. Duh.
