That depends on the desired battery life when using the battery alone to power the system. The 12-cell batteries typically weigh more and extend the size of many laptops. What type do you have now?

This seems to be the default battery. 6-cell:

6 cell according to specs, here are examples of what I believe are original replacement batteries for this laptop:

I don't know it does not say on the battery is have. Is there a way of checking. Would a 12 give it better battery life?

Default is 6 cell and that is what I would buy but you can always buy 12 cell but they can kind of stick out of your laptop and they are quite more expesive.

For that older system, just get the cheap battery from Amazon (linked earlier). The system itself (relatively old) is really not worth the expense otherwise.
