What would be the best antivirus around you would recommend?

Kapersky is popular. NOD32 has been popping up lately as well.

They are all fairly good against known threats though. Most AV is quite bad at zero day threats, so you are never really 100% safe. If you browse responsibly, use sandboxes or sandboxed browsers (really all of them now), and don't install things you don't trust the source of, you should be fairly safe.

I would never pay for AV when you can get a perfectly good one for free:

2 of the best free ones are Avera and Avast.

As Eximo suggested it is good idea to use a sandbox to browse the internet. I would also suggest getting adblock plus for your browser and install malwarebytes anti-exploit & zemana anti-logger.

Having all these programs combined with good browsing/downloading behaviour should greatly reduce the chance of infection.

you only pay for an antivirus for its 24/7 support and enterprise solutions. please stick with the free ones if you are just working on a personal computer. and windows defender is stable enough. tho if you want browser level protection. you can opt for avast/avira. if you want more control on whats happening on your installed apps/firewall, you can download comodo.
