Those asking about the motor and 3-axis sensor:

The motor is used to tilt the head up/down on the base. This can be invoked either from the tuner software (which you run in a new room), or from individual games. Example: Switch from a track and field game to say ping-pong. It is now uninterested in your legs so may tilt the camera up some.

3-axis sensor: Lets kinect tell if it's on a level surface for tuner purposes. It will also pause play and give a warning if you say pick it up and relocate it.

with that amount of hardware there's nothing stopping MS from expanding the device's capabilities, plonk an array of IR emitters on something similar to a move (a gun shaped device even) expand the kinect language to understand skeleton + peripheral device, pew pew indeed.....
