That depends on the application. CD audio uses PCM as it's default audio transport method. All DVD/BluRay discs use PCM as their default 2.0 channel mix. Most bluray players also convert their Dolby Digital HD / DTS Master signals into a high bitrate 7.1 PCM signal to use on receivers that don't have the format built in.
