So I am looking at buying a new laptop, I am planning on using it for hardcore gaming like max graphics or close( I know gaming on a laptop supposedly an awful idea), video editing, maybe running a few personal servers every now and then, and I will be taking it to college in a about a year and a half(reason I am getting a laptop instead of a desktop). So when you mention gaming laptop, you often hear alienware, but imo alienware is overpriced junk sorry to hurt anyone's feelings. So I have 2 HP laptops picked out as listed below

ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition
Windows 8.1 64 bit (Should I pay the extra $70 and go with the pro? I'm thinking no, but open to suggestions)
4th generation I7-4700MQ ( or I could upgrade to the 4th gen. I7-4800MQ for $175 more)
Nvidea GeForce GT 740m with 2048MB
15.6" Screen with full hd at 1920x1080 (Touchscreen).
8GB DDR3 1 dimm (easier to upgrade in future if need be)
1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid hard drive
24GB flash hard drive acceleration cache
Two 6-cell lithium ions ( anyone have an aprox. battery life on those? It doesn't seem list one)
Backlit keyboard
802.11 AC WLAN and Bluetooth [2x2]
Total Price $1,213.99

OR

ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition
Windows 8.1 64 bit (Again should I go with pro?)
4th gen. I7-4702MQ
NVIDEA GeForce GT 750M with 4096MB
15.6" Screen with full hd at 1920x1080 (Touchscreen).
8GB DDR3 1 dimm (Again easier to upgrade in future if need be)
1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid hard drive
24GB flash hard drive acceleration cache
Two 6-cell lithium ions (Again anyone have an aprox. battery life on those? It doesn't seem list one)
Backlit keyboard
802.11 AC WLAN and Bluetooth [2x2]
Total Price $1368.99
I don't care to pay the extra price for the one above if it is better for my purposes.
Also when I am at my house, I will have an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and will likely set the laptop behind the monitor so really it will serve as a desktop and laptop. Also have an external dvd drive, so that's not an issue either.
Which one do would you guys go with? Sorry for the post being so long, and I hope I have it in the right forum...

Solution

actually not, both have a stock clockspeed of 2.4GHZ and both have a TURBO clock speed of 3.4 GHZ
lol, krogers. i can barely find a job at mcdonald's, lol. i'm on welfare and have veterans benefits about to find free housing from the military and i wanted to buy a computer so i tried for a job, funny story, i found the inspiron 15 and instantly i fell in love again with dell laptops. lol. always delivering what i need. lol.

like i said earlier, with both GPU's in the laptop the battery life is around 2-3 hours ( i have a weaker 62wh battery and that model has 72wh )

but when i remove the 2nd gpu ( takes <1 min ) and installed intel drivers, i got Nvidia optimus working ( in SLI mode it doesnt work so basically if you have both gpus in the laptop you cant use the CPU's integrated Graphic card )
do that, and you will get battery life of 4-7 hrs i believe

when idle with power saver mode on CPU's cores are usualy around 40c
when browsing the web 45-50c

when playing intensive games ( BF3/4, Farcry 3 etcetc...) in high performance mode the CPU hits around 80c

1st 755M - 80C
2nd 755M +85C ( seen max of 96C )

edit : pretty much all gaming laptops run 70-80c temps when gaming.

Thermal throttling is not an issue.

Hmm, well you guys have eliminated the HPs, and the Dell, so its now Lenovo vs Asus.
The Lenovo has the better GPU from the benchmark, and a 24gb ssd, Longer battery life, and more ram, and more mobility. And maybe a bit more durable with the case. and weighs less, due to the smaller screen. That looks pretty good, but I hope it on sale come time when I have enough cash
