Question which wireless adapter do i buy?

i have an hp that was given to me and it’s a windows 8. it says there are no networks available so i did the troubleshooting and it said i needed an ethernet cable to connect to the internet. i don’t want to hardwire my computer into my router so i’d like an alternative. i tried every single trick i’ve seen on the internet after rephrasing my question a million times and looking it up. i bought a wireless bluetooth adapter and the drivers are installed ( i think ) but i still can’t get it to connect. i’m almost positive i bought the wrong adapter but i really need some help so i can order the right one and get my school work done during the corona break.

What specific adapter did you install? Nearly all laptops (made in last 15, or longer, years) have some sort of wireless network adapter. What specific make/model laptop are you using?
