Why does it show red x on my tablet when I plug in the charger

So it won't charge my tablet it just shows a red x over the lighting bolt please help

Try a different charger, different cable, if the battery is removable, replace the battery.

This worked for my Galaxy Tab 12.2;
With tablet on and unplugged, hold down power button briefly enough (so not to turn off tablet) to plug in cable, then release power button.

This worked great on my Samsung Tab E 8.0. After I plugged in the cable and released the power button, the shut of button and the restart button was on the screen. I hit the back button and the red "X" was gone.

My iPad charges ok but won't turn on, I get a little green man and then a big red X on the screen why ?
