My 50" plasma had to be first turned on to warm up for about 10 minutes or so with no picture, then i can turn it off and back on and it will work. Any ideas?

Solution
Thats likely a problem with the screen controller or main board of the tv (source: my dad was a tv repair man, and has an awesome set of tools). Both are not cheap to replace, depending on the age may not be available, and for the cost (you can get a 50 inch LCD for $500 these days) not really worth it unless its a Pioneer Kuro.
No way to fix that without replacing the guts. If it really bothers you, get a newer set.

Usually TVs that start with this type of issue end up dead not long afterwards.

Since you have plasma. If you plan to replace it with LCD, check sets in the store. LCD does not always have good black levels(different screen types and filters). Motion should be good enough on today's sets.
