wifi not detecting

Plz can anyone help i have 2 laptops one is way too old and one i just bought recently i download things a lot in my room the old laptop was giving nice speed but the new one connects for like a very very low range if i try to go into my room it would disconnect and will not show any available wifi untill i take it near or maybe i should say 'on the head' of the wifi router

What is the brand of your new laptop?

some cheap laptops have very weak signal receivers?
I once bought a cheap new laptop one year ago and that the signal receiver is so weak that it cannot detect wifi unless it is head on the source.
The laptop got destroyed because the hinges were so weak.
