WiFi Router setup

I just bought a Netgear N300 WiFi Router (WNR2000v5). I access the internet from a wall socket using an ethernet cable. Then, I have to open a browser and sign in to a website with a username and password.
The netgear genie found a "network connection issue: the router cannot connect to the internet with the current settings".
Called netgear telephone line and have been on waiting for 40 minutes. Need help!

Is it some kind of free or shared internet? I dont know if a normal home router is even capable of that. Would be interesting to hear if you're able to.
