[citation][nom]Wamphryi[/nom]Its hardly a surprise that Wikileaks is in this position. You don't get to embarrass a large number of Governments including the US without some kind of response. They are not going to sit on their hands and do nothing. In some respects Assange is lucky. It was not that many years ago he would have simply disappeared.[/citation]
Just another sign that the US has less and less say in international affairs, of any sort. The Truman Doctrine failed. As for "embarrass a large number of Governments", the embarrassment was their own, the messenger is never the cause of the embarrassment. Yes I am well aware of the Wikileaks debate, it's as old as politics. Do the people have the right to be privy to the inner-workings of their governments? The answer is simple. Depends on the system, and it greatly depends on what is kept from the people. Wikileaks has for the most part shed light on matters that were kept from us because it would have been inconvenient and embarrassing to report to the people. That should outrage people 1000 times more than a petty rape charge.

I wonder what exactly costs so much? If they can't afford the traffic costs then use torrents or something. Spend the rest on legal defence. Totally up for what they do, because it uncovers how really corrupt and wasteful all governments around the world are.

[citation][nom]3ddraft[/nom]What does he expect? What he did is espionage and he's lucky he doesn't have a worse sentence for it.[/citation]

If what he did was espionage, then why wasn't he charged with espionage? He is just reporting information that other people have given him, his role is the reporter. No connection has been made that he personally committed espionage obtaining the documents. Your same logic would have had Woodward and Bernstein in jail for uncovering the Watergate scandal.

Not so long ago, the American people were also outraged by corruption and the media was out to report the truth. Now the media is just a government mouthpiece, swaying you towards candidates they can control and away from candidates they can't get a leash on. Now they refuse to cover the growing unrest swelling up in major cities and even other countries. Now the president is allowed to lie to us without fear of impeachment. Now the people are too sedated to realize they're being led down a path where the government usurps more of their rights. If Assange was an american, he would've been dragged off as a "terrorist" and put in prison without a trial. Just remember, unless you do what Uncle Sam tells you, it could be you next.

So obtaining sensitive federal documents isn't espionage? What is? I have no idea why he wasn't but my opinion is that he should have been. My wife served in the military and for him to publish what he did and put troops and officials in more danger than normal is criminal in my opinion. Yes the military faces danger every day but for a reporter to endanger them just to "reveal the truth" is wrong. If he is so concerned with there being no privacy, why doesn't he publish his personal passwords?

And the media... well the media will only sway you if you let it. If a person takes time to research and think, they can see past the slant of the media. And you're right, it is a government mouthpiece if you only consider the media as major media. Wikileaks is media... didn't sound like much of a government mouthpiece to me. Come on and think!

To those claiming it's espionage, wouldn't that mean that everyone who downloaded the Wikileaks leaks was also guilty of espionage? Even if it was from youtube?

Literally probably so. But there comes a point when you have to ask, if it's effective to charge those who downloaded it? Or is it more effective to charge the ones responsible for making that information public? Same reason why it's absurd to go after the soccer moms or kids who download a song or two. It's just to make an example at that point which is a touchy thing to do. Once something is public, it can't be stolen via espionage. The espionage occurs when you take part in making secret knowledge public.

Thank God this A-hole is finally being forced to close down, another terrorist sympthizer is gone. You see, Wikileaks can only publish classified stuff of countries that are decent, humane, and care about abuses. Why doesn't Wikileaks publish classified stuff from Iran, Al-Queda, Syria, or Hamas? Because they can't, there are no leakers because such leakers will be found out, tortored, and killed along with any other collaborators. Wikileaks can only publish domuments of countries that ARE NOT oppressive or evil.

Secondly, most of what Wikileaks publishes has nothing to do with governmetn corruption or abuse. They are just communications between diplomats and other agencies, and there is good reason why a document saying, "We don't trust Pakistan, we think they are helping terrorists", should stay classified. It produces no value to ordinary people because there is no abuse going on, but publishing those documents lets Pakistan know that we're suspicious and harms the relationship between both countries.

Look at the drama that happens on reality TV shows, most of it revolves around, "She said this about you". Well Wikileaks is like the main antagonizer in those shows, spreading private stuff that only will create drama and dissent. I'm sure you've said crap about your friends and other aquaintances, what if that was published? Again that would only create negatives, and produce zero positivse.

Wikileaks and its leakers should go to jail. The problem is that our countries are too moral and protective of free speech with good systems already in place to protect and guarantee the rights of individuals over the government and where government is already responsive to its citizens. In short, Wikileaks only goes after the good guys because only the good guys have this weakness because they are not oppressive.
