Will this laptop be good for gaming?

Hello,
I just ordered this laptop and wanted to know if it should run most games now. if so how well should it do? what would be its weak and strong points? here is its info:

Alienware m14x
Windows 7 pro

3 GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M (graphics i think)

16 GB, NON-ECC, 1600MHZ DDR3 (8x2) (RAM)

750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor (2.4 GHz, overclocked to 3.5 GHz w/Turbo Boost,6MB Cache)


Also will this be good For school? (I am going to a new highschool and wanted a decent laptop for basic stuff) and Mabey, just Mabey would it be good enough to run autocad?

It's weak point would be the memory bandwidth for the GPU. DDR3 is less than ideal, but considering the alternative is power-hungry GDDR5, the tradeoff is acceptable for laptops, especially if you're only gaming at 720 resolutions (1280x720 - 1366x768). It should be good, but without a price-tag it's hard to say for sure. But purely from a performance standpoint, it should be fine.

Also, turbo technically isn't overclocking. It's resource allocation. Even in Turbo, the CPU stays within it's specified power and thermal limits. Also, it only turbos when the thermals and power allow for it.

i am pretty sure the resolution is 1600x900... will it still be ok? and i am paying about 1400 for it so i am hoping it will do ok. That is interesting about the turbo not being overclocking... i never knew there was a difference! thanks,

Is that out the door (shipping and tax included)? Or a sub-total? Because as a sub-total, you can find much better for the price.

This one for example comes armed with a 3rd generation i7 and a more powerful GT650 (Kepler) in an 11.6" package. The default configuration is ~$984. Whats particularly attractive about the 3rd gen is the more powerful Intel HD 4000 graphics engine. With NVidia Optimus technology (graphics switching), it would allow you to spend more time using the Intel graphics which means power savings.

Both of those look like great options! I was wondering what the advantage the GT650 has over the GT555m since the 555 has 3gb of graphics whereas the 650 has two? I am pretty much a beginner with high performance pcs, and i am sorry if its a silly question. Thank You!

oh sorry dude, but alienware's are overpriced, I wish you asked us before you ordered it, because for $1400 shipped price, we would have been able to find you a much better laptop.

Yeah haha thats what i was afraid of...

But i guess the good news is that im sure this wont be the last computer i buy so there is always next time! What is your take on it- do you think it will be capable of playing games like Skyrim and mabey Crysis 2 & Black Opps?

The extra memory won't help. Most games don't utilize more than 1GB at 1080p. None of my games utilize more than 800MB on my Radeon 5830. 2GB is future proofing. The GT 650 is based on the Kepler architecture. Kepler is much more efficient than Fermi (GT 500 series) and much faster too.

The W150ER is preferred over the W110ER because the GT 650m in the W110ER is GDDR3. For your price range, the best performance per dollar is Lenovo Y580.
