Win2k Ghost/Clone Laptop HD - Boot hanging on IBM T23

I have a thinkpad T23 w/ a 20gig HD. I have hooked up a new 80gig
Hitachi HD via USB to the thinkpad. I have used Symantec/Norton Ghost
2003 to CLONE the 20gig HD to the 80gig HD. When the clone process is
completed, I can browse the USB 80 gig and see all my files are there!
When I replace the 20gig with the 80gig the system fails to boot (no
error message - just hangs w/ a flashing cursor - somewhere after the
initial post).

The 80gig HD is compatible w/ the T23 (latest bios revision). I have
even installed a clean win2k from my original T23 cd's on the HD and
it boots w/o any problem! But I don't want to strart from scratch! I
really want to clone my old HD to the new one!

I have tried running Partition Magic 8.0 on the ghosted 80gig and it
does fix the partition size -- but still same boot problem.

I have tried using the Win2k recovery console to fixboot and fixmbr
(not sure if that is correct file names) --- but while they always say
"fixed ok" the system still fails to boot!

The only altrernative I have not yet tried is installing win2k over
the ghost image.....

I wanted to try using Drive Image 2002 as an alternative, but
Powerquest's Drive Image 2002 doesn't
support HD's hooked up via usb! I guess I could use something like
"DUSE.EXE" from bootdisk.com (dos usb drivers...) but how would I then
execute the diskcopy???

I looked at the boot ini after cloningw/ Ghost 2002:

The strange thing is.... Bootini is the same on both drives - yet the
20gig boots
and the 80gig just hangs (flashing cursor on black screen)

ANY HELP WOULD GREATLY BE APPRECIATED!!!!!

It sounds like a geometry problem, the same thing that can happen if you try
to clone a hard drive on a different type of machine.

To insure a good clone, get IBM's Second HDD Adapter, P/N 08K6068:

Put the 80GB drive in the adapter and put it in your Ultrabay, then do the
clone again. Now it will work--I do this all the time.

FWIW, I have the 2nd HDD adapter and I'm also using W2K + Ghost (v.
7.0). Ghost works fine when cloning to disks of the same size (I also
do this all the time, for backup purposes). However, I have had
problems cloning to bigger drives (eg. when upgrading from a 20 GB
drive to a 40 GB one, and again from 40 GB to 60 GB). The symptoms
were the same as with the original poster: it looked like the cloning
went on OK, but the bigger drive would not boot. My solution has been
to use Drive Image (v. 5) when cloning to a drive of a different size:
for some reason, Drive Image has had no problem. I prefer Ghost when
cloning to same-size drives, because it's much faster.

Interesting... So I may be way off the mark thinking the problem was the USB
drive vs. the internal 2nd HDD adapter.

I have used Ghost a number of times to go to a larger drive and it's worked
OK. OTOH, I've also had Ghost fail to clone a drive at all--but in my case
it's always been with an error message during the copy operation.

Drive Image has usually worked well for me too, but sometimes it's bailed
out with an error message as well.

The program that is currently working most reliably for me is Paragon Drive
Backup (www.drive-backup.com). It has failed yet, even on a drive where both
Ghost and Drive Image bail out with error messages.

If there were a program as fast as Ghost that worked all the time, I'd be a
happy camper!

I had the same problem with an older Thinkpad 600x.

My guess is that the USB drive adapter can't address the boot sector
or something.

I made a Ghost boot floppy, reversed the drives (original on USB, new
drive in the laptop) and did it that way and it worked. I must have
tried a million settings with the drives in the obvious configuration
(new drive via USB, original in the laptop) but I always had the same
problem you describe.

Reversing the drives like that is a great idea. It just might do the trick.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!!!

Be *sure* you select the correct source and destination drives when you do
this. Don't take the defaults, which will copy from the internal drive to
the external. Ghost puts up a confirmation dialog, but it is one of the most
dangerous and misleading dialogs that has ever been invented. When you set
up the copy and it shows you a screen that says "Destination Drive Details",
it's easy to think this is showing you the contents of the destination drive
that you are clobbering. This is not what the dialog displays. It shows you
what the destination drive will look like *after* the copy. So, this dialog
should show partitions that resemble your source drive, possibly resized. If
that's not what it shows, stop and start over.
