I bought a laptop almost a year ago and it got the BSOD almost instantly. I had personal things going on at the time, and it didn't seem like a priority to take it back at the time. I'm regretting it now. It still gets the BSOD every time within 30 minutes when watching videos, browsing the web, etc. I should note that HWMonitor reports the CPU reaching 80-100 celcius?!?! Here is what I have tried:

1) Running extended memory diagnostic check
2) Running extended hard disk diagnostic check
3) Reformatting Windows 8
4) Downloading and installing all updates and drivers through Windows Update

Brand new from Best Buy. I even took it to the great Geek Squad, and they told me they couldn't recreate the error. I think that is complete ----. I think they said that because my final return date was a few days away, and they didn't want me to return it. He tried telling me that 100 degrees celcius was fine...for an idle CPU. One more thing to note: The bottom of the laptop never feels hot...

It was my fault for not returning it right then and there, but now I am stuck with it.

Yeah. I've actually been researching the dis-assembly of my laptop. I am going to re-apply thermal paste, and make sure nothing looks out of place. However, it's just weird that the bottom of the laptop isn't hot.

1) Is there a chance that HWMonitor could be wrong? Or maybe something else (hardware or software issue) is causing the wrong temperature reading?

2) What else causes overheating besides a poor thermal paste application, or the heatsink not being attached correctly?

Installed Windows and turned Updates off. No BSoD yet after an hour, which is good. However, I haven't really pushed it yet. I'm going to load a bunch of apps/websites and see what happens.

On another note, the package temp in HWMonitor still shows over 100C. I'm not sure what the "package temperature" is exactly, but it doesn't show the cores individually. I also downloaded Core Temp, which I read was another good app, but it didn't show the individual cores either.

I note that it doesn't show the cores because when I look at these apps on my desktop, each core has it's own temp recording.

I took a screenshot here of Task Manager, CPU-Z, HWMonitor, and Core Temp open. I have a couple more questions:

1) Why does the Performance section in the Task Manager only show 1 CPU utilization box, when the CPU has 4 cores? Is that a Windows 8 feature that has changed from Windows 7 and previous versions, which shows the 4 cores individually? I'm suspicious of this because I only have Netflix and the Kodi.tv app open, and the utilization is up to 86%+ ?!?

2) The Core Temp app only shows CPU #0, when it should be showing #1, #2, and #3 for a total of 4 cores. Why is that?
