windows 8 serial key

i have a laptop with pre installed windows 8(original)
i want to format it because of the bloatware
can i format it to win 8.1 AND USE THE SAME SERIAL KEY FOR ACTIVATION??

you may be better getting a program like revo uninstaller and using that to get rid of all the crap on your computer

No, if it came with 8, you need to install 8, if it came with 8.1 you need to install 8.1. For some reason 8 Keys don't work for windows 8.1.

I learned it the hard way.

but you should be able to install 8 then upgrade for free to 8.1

Microsoft and Windows hasn't done Serial number registration when it comes to OS reinstallation which is pretty much one of the few things I do like about OS X over Windows. Even if your Windows 8 computer has legitly upgraded to 8.1 the product key embedded into the BIOS won't reflect that and it'll always be the same.
