Hi, I want to buy a new Windows laptop. I am not technically literate in this area, so some of my answers below may not be precise. In general, I believe I am a "light" user in the sense that I do no gaming and my focus is on word processing and using the internet. I am also older and therefore believe a 15 inch screen is the lowest I would go with (have trouble with small print so need more screen area). I am willing to pay a bit more for high quality.

1. What is your budget?

$1750 US

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

15 inch or 17 inch.

3. What screen resolution do you want?

Not sure how to answer, but want the viewing experience to be easy on the eyes (I am older but still working and may need to do 10+ hours a day of working with documents).

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

Not sure what the difference is - I would generally use this laptop at home connected to one or two secondary monitors but will occasionally take it to, for example, a coffee shop

5. How much battery life do you need?

8 hours, but I believe I would rarely need this much

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

No games

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Word Processing, Excel, Internet - nothing else I can think of.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

Don't know how to answer, but I suspect I need less than many people. I do not have a lot of videos or pictures and, while I work with documents (I am a kind of technical writer), I do not have to deal with many, very large documents.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

No specific sites under consideration.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

At least 5 years.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

Don't know if I need one - suspect I do not.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

No brand preference although I have a vague impression that Dell, Microsoft, and HP make high quality laptops.

13. What country do you live in?

Canada

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

While I am currently employed full-time and use an HP laptop provided by my company, I may, in the future, do contract work that would be focused on technical writing / marketing (but without the need to do any fancy graphics work). In general terms, please think of my needs as those of someone working in an office. My eyes get "tired" easily, so I would strongly prefer a laptop that is less "stressful" on the eyes.

A rather important point that may help narrow things down: I like a high quality keyboard, preferably a "clicky" one. I had trackpads and never use them.

To meet your stated needs, your budget is quite a bit more than is needed.

What is the make/model of your current device?
Thank you very much for your answer. I am actually not surprised that my budget is more than enough for my needs. My current laptop is a 2013 MacBook Pro. Yes, I know that is a very old computer. I know it is blasphemous in some circles to say bad things about Apple, but I find the human machine interfaces provided by their programs to be profoundly counterintuitive. Of course, this may have something to do with the fact that my laptop for work is a Windows laptop and I am therefore used to Windows. Either way, I do not want do deal with a Mac operating system.

Having said this, I will acknowledge the durability and physical robustness of my mac. It has been smashed and banged around more than it has deserved, and it keeps on chugging.

Just to be clear, my post is about acquiring a laptop for personal use now, and possibly for work if and when I become a contractor in the future (and I'm no longer provided with a laptop by a company).
